Spring Equinox represents the change of seasons - the celebrating of coming out of the dark-wintery time and heading into Spring the rebirth of life!
One way to celebrate the Spring Equinox is by doing 108 Sun Salutations - typically, this ritual is performed 4 times per year at the start of each new season as a way of acknowledging the changes across mother earth.
The 108 Sun Salutation practice is called Mala - represented by the 108 mala beads or prayer beads. There is a lot more history behind the number 108 in the Hindu and Buddhist traditions.
- In Sanskrit, there were initially 54 sounds in the sanskrit alphabet (2 x 54 = 108).
- There are 108 Upinishads - these are part of the oldest Hindu scripts.
- There are 108 Hindu deities
- The between the Earth and the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Sun - which represents the distance from the devotee to the Divine.
- And, then.. some say there are 108 feelings - 36 related to the past, 36 related to the present and 36 related to the future.
The roots of all goodness lie in the soil of appreciation for goodness. ~ Dalai Lama
May you all be blessed with a refreshing Spring!
